Las primeras acuñaciones japonesas modernas en las que aparece la
fecha fueron acuñadas en 1873. La fecha del calendario japonés
empieza a contar a partir de la subida al trono de cada emperador, siendo
el primer año el año 1, y así sucesivamente hasta
su sucesión, cuando vuelve a contar de 1.
Para simplificar la indentificación de la fecha, buscaremos en la
moneda los símbolos que puedan identificarse como números
según la tabla de esta página. Normalmente se encontrarán
junto a los símbolos que identifican al emperador vigente.
Hasta 1948, para leer el año, estos símbolos debían
leerse de derecha a izquierda; a partir de ese año, con la introducción
del yen como moneda nacional, la dirección de lectura fue la opuesta
(de izquierda a derecha). De este modo:
Antes de 1948:   
(Año 39 de la era Meiji, Emperador Mutsuhito) = 1906
Desde 1948: 
(Año 34 de la era Showa, Emperador Hiroito) = 1959
Nótese que el símbolo del 10 sigue al número de
decena del año.

The first modern issues showing the date appeared in 1873. The year in
the Japanese calendar starts counting when each Emperor ascends to the
throne, being the first year the year 1, and so on till his his heir succeeds
him, when the year starts counting from 1.
To make the date identification simple, we will look in the coin the symbols
which can be identified as numbers, according to the table above. Normally,
they will be found next to the current Emperor.
Until 1948, to read the year, these symbols should be read from right to
left; since that year, when the yen was introduced as the national currency,
the direction of reading is the opposite (from left to right). Like this:
Before 1948:
(Year 39 of the Meiji Era, Emperor Mutsuhito) = 1906
From 1948:
(Year 34 of the Showa Era, Emperor Hiroito) = 1959
Please note that the symbol for 10 follows the number for the tens of
the year.
